Hanover Boys Roll; Lee-Davis Girls Escape With Victories

Justin Peebles scored 18 points, Nick Douglas 16 and Trayvonte Brown 15 as Hanover poured in 64 points in the first half on the way to a 96-49 win over Lee-Davis at Hanover High School Friday night.

Brown also added seven rebounds and five steals. Josh Brown led Lee-Davis with 13 points.

Meanwhile, the Lee-Davis girls withstood a last-minute rally with a key steal and basket to hold on for a road victory over Hanover, 46-44.

Cole Stout To James Madison

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Cole Stout, an all-Metro first teamer in 2011 for Atlee, will be going to James Madison University as a walk-on.

Best of luck to Cole in Harrisonburg. He'll join several Central Region graduates on the roster for James Madison, including Ryan Smith and Adrian Cavanaugh of Patrick Henry, Deane Cheatham and Marzae Brooks of Hanover, and Justin Thorpe of Varina.

Katie Anderson scored 18 points while Amber Lee added 9 as Patrick Henry's girls basketball team improved to 16-0 Wednesday evening with a 57-27 win over Douglas Freeman, their second win over the Rebels in a week.

Anderson added 10 rebounds for another double-double, while Summer Price had 7 points, 6 assists and 6 steals.

The Patriots go for the 17th straight win Friday afternoon at home against the Maggie Walker Governor's School Dragons.

Matt Crenshaw has resigned as head football coach at J.R. Tucker High School in Henrico's West End. Crenshaw went 12-18 over three seasons, including an 8-2 record in 2009.

Katie Anderson scored 11 points in each half on her way to a double-double as Patrick Henry picked up a road win over John Marshall Tuesday evening, 69-42.

Anderson added 11 rebounds to her 22 points, while sophomore Summer Price poured in 19 points and had 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Patrick Henry has two home games this week, tomorrow evening against Douglas Freeman and Friday against Maggie Walker Governors School. The Patriots are 10-0 in the Colonial District, and 15-0 on the season.

The Patrick Henry girls basketball team improved to a perfect 13-0 Thursday evening with a 63-57 win over Hermitage. Amber Lee led the Patriots with 16 points and 9 rebounds, with Katie Anderson adding 11 and Summer Price 10.

The Panthers were plagued with poor shooting in the first half despite dominating the offensive glass. Kiana Brown led Hermitage with 20 points.

In boys action, Raymon Minor poured in 21 points, leading the Patriots past Hermitage 67-57. Sevon Morris added 17, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the third quarter to end a Panther threat.

Raymon Minor scored 26 points, going over 1,000 career points as Patrick Henry moved to 7-4 with an impressive 62-48 win over J.R. Tucker in Ashland Friday night. Minor added six steals and five rebounds to his stat line. Tyler Dandridge scored 10 for the Patriots.

Meanwhile, Summer Price scored 13 points and Katie Anderson added 11 as the Patrick Henry girls squad easily handled Tucker, 60-29. The Patriots bolted out to a 37-10 halftime lead, holding Tucker without a field goal for a 12 1/2 minute stretch in the first half. The Patriots are now 11-0.

Both teams travel to Deep Run for matchups against the Wildcats on Tuesday evening. The girls tip off at 6pm, with the boys at approximately 7:30pm.

Lee-Davis and Trinity Episcopal were first round winners Tuesday night in the annual Southerner Classic held in Mechanicsville.

The Confederates got by King William 42-30 while Trinity Episcopal disposed of Colonial Heights 79-50.

Patrick Henry opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to take the lead for the first time since early in the first, but could not close the door in the end.

PH Sweeps Hanover In Hoops

Raymon Minor's 28 points led Patrick Henry to a 93-71 win over Hanover Wednesday night in boys basketball action. The Patriots (3-2) took a three-point lead after one quarter, outscored the Hawks by 10 in the second quarter, and never looked back.

Sam Rogers scored 14 for the Hawks, who are now 2-3 going into winter break. Patrick Henry next plays in its Holiday Tournament beginning December 28th.

In girls action, Patrick Henry used dominant performances in the second and third quarters to defeat Hanover 59-47 to stay unbeaten at 6-0. The Lady Hawks are now 3-2.

Due to a heavy roof leak in the gymnasium of the new Glen Allen High School, the JV game (won by Glen Allen) was moved in the midst of the game to the auxiliary court.

After varsity squads warmed up, it was determined the leak was worsening and, in the interest of player safety, the varsity game was postponed to a later, as yet to be announced date.

This only affected the boys game. The girls teams were meeting tonight at Patrick Henry.

Highland Springs jumped to a 29-point lead by halftime and rolled over Lee-Davis Tuesday night 89-40, handing the Confederates their first loss of the season (now 0-1 in the Capital District, 3-1 overall).

Hanover, still shorthanded as football players begin to join the basketball team, fell in their Capital District opener to Henrico 87-61. Tyler Shannon led the Hawks (0-1 Capital, 0-2 overall) with 26 points.

John Marshall scored a mind-boggling 34 points in the first quarter en route to a 104-67 win over Patrick Henry in Colonial District play. The Patriots fall to 0-2 in the Colonial, 1-2 overall.

GIRLS:

Hanover jumped out to a huge first quarter lead and never looked back, winning their first game of 2011-12 over Henrico 71-38. The Hawks are 1-1 overall, 1-0 in the Capital District.

Patrick Henry continued its winning ways with a 19-point win over John Marshall, 75-56 to go to 3-0 in the Colonial District and overall.

Lee-Davis couldn't muster much offense in its Capital District opener, losing to Highland Springs 62-25. The Confederates are now 2-1 overall.

The boys and girls teams from Atlee and Hanover all lost in basketball action Monday night.

In boys action, a furious fourth quarter comeback fell short as Atlee lost to Clover Hill, 68-61 to fall to 0-3. Meanwhile, a 20-6 Cosby run through the third quarter evaporated a Hanover halftime lead, providing cushion for a 72-61 win over the Hawks in their season opener (now 0-1).

In girls play, Atlee fell to 0-2 by virtue of a 56-33 loss to Clover Hill, while Cosby had no problem with Hanover, 65-26. The Hawks are 0-1.

For Coach Josh Just and the Hanover Hawks staff, and especially for their defense, those two words will haunt them for a long time.

When asked how frustrating third downs were for his Hawks, Just answered, "Very. You hit the nail on the head."

Hanover's inability to stop South County on third down on a minimum of nine occasions cost the Hawks dearly as the Stallions built a 24-0 halftime lead on the way to a 38-22 win in the State Division 5 Semifinal in Lorton Saturday.

South County scored on their opening drive, setting up shop at the Hanover 40 after a 35-yard opening kickoff return by Ryan Taylor. On the drive, Hanover did stop the Stallions on third down, but on fourth and short, the Stallions rushed up the middle enough for a first down. On the next play, quarter Shane Foley threw deep for his favorite target, wideout Michael Ferguson, who outwilled and outleapt Hanover's Xavier Crocker for the first touchdown.

"I'd put X on him again", said Hanover Coach Josh Just after the game. "Number 8 (Ferguson) is incredible."

The Hawks spent the first half trying in vain to move the chain and spending little time on the Stallions side of the field. Tailback L.J. Jones, who rushed for 450 yards in two regional playoff wins, only accounted for 18 in the first half.

The Stallions increased their lead for good in the second quarter, first by Andrew Rector's 22 yard touchdown run. Later, after Hanover fumbled the ensuing kickoff for the first of their three turnovers, the Stallions reached into their bag of tricks. On a third down, a double-reverse flea flicker pass to Ferguson was good for 35 yards to the Hawks 5. After the Hawks backed them up to the 11, on third down and goal, running back Jake Josephs took a pitch, stopped, and threw an 11-yard halfback option touchdown pass to Ferguson, making it 21-0.

"We watched alot of tape on these guys and didn't see that", Just said.

Hanover scored on the opening possession of the second half, sparked by a 72-yard pass completion from Andrew Knizner to Sam Rogers. L.J. Jones scored from nine yards out, the first of his three second half touchdowns, to quickly cut the lead to 24-7.

But if there were any doubts of the Stallions' dominance on this day, they would be erased by the Foley-led offense, counterpunching with a touchdown drive of their own four minutes later. The Hawks answered again on a three-minute drive, capped off by a six-yard run by Jones, but the Stallions scored one final time on the first play of the fourth quarter to nail down the victory.

Hanover scored once more late in the fourth on Jones' third touchdown run from five yards out. Jones also converted the two-point conversion to finish the scoring.

The Hawks were uncharacterstically undisciplined in the penalty area, committing nine fouls, including four personal fouls, for 85 yards. Knizner finished 11 of 19 for 197 yards, 117 of them to Sam Rogers. Jones finished with 60 yards on just 12 carries, but the three second-half touchdowns.

Some Hanover fans, and this observer, questioned why several false start penalties seemingly committed by the South County offense weren't called, especially in the first half, as it seemed Foley would take at least a half-step back prior to the ball snap. It would be the third quarter before a false start was called on their motion-filled offense.

Foley finished 12 of 16 for 184 yards and three passing touchdowns for South County, with Michael Ferguson accounting for five receptions, 95 yards, and three touchdowns.

South County (11-3) moves to next Saturday's State Division 5 Championship against Phoebus, a 27-26 overtime winner over North Stafford.

The Hawks finish 2011 at 10-3, and though they lose several key players, the nucleus of this team, including Jones, Rogers and Knizner, will return in 2012.

When asked about the future, Just said, "...we'll focus on that later. Right now we want to spend time with our seniors and appreciate what they've done for this program. Then we'll work on picking up where we left off. That's what we do."

The Patrick Henry girls basketball team moved to 2-0 on the young season with their second straight Colonial District win, 62-58 over Mills Godwin on Thursday night. The Patriots were down by one after three quarters, but outscored the Eagles 23-18 in the final stanza for the victory. Katie Anderson led PH with 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Patrick Henry's boys team got their first win of 2011-12 over county rivals Atlee 81-54, pulling away before halftime and maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the second half. Khalil Mock had 11 points and 8 rebounds, plus 3 assists and 3 steals for the Patriots, now 1-1. Atlee is 0-1.

Tuesday night marked the first game of the 2011-12 high school basketball season for many teams.

In girls play, Patrick Henry opened their season with a 55-46 Colonial District win over Deep Run, using a 20-9 third quarter run to take the lead for good.

Lee-Davis begins its season tonight at home against Maggie Walker Governors School at 7:30pm. Hanover doesn't play until Monday when they welcome Cosby to Chamberlayne Road. Atlee's season begins Friday night when they travel to face 0-1 Deep Run.

Meanwhile the PH Patriots boys squad fell in their opener to Deep Run in the Colonial District, 62-47. The boys team next plays Atlee Thursday night in Ashland. This will be the season opener for the Raiders.

Hanover opens its 2011-12 season Monday night in Chesterfield at Cosby High School, while Lee-Davis begins its campaign tonight against the Maggie Walker Governors School.

Hanover Wins Third Regional Title In Five Years

The Hanover Hawks dominated from the start, upending the top-seeded Atlee Raiders in the Central Region Division 5 Regional Championship Friday night, 31-12.

Hanover broke the game open late in the first quarter. After a 23-yard pass from Andrew Knizner to Sam Rogers made it 10-0, the Raiders' Kenner Berry had a pass tipped on third down into the hands of David Cryster, who raced 32 yards for the pick six, making it 17-0.

The Raiders scored on a safety and on the subsequent second quarter drive moved the ball to the Hanover 1. The drive stalled, with Berry fumbling a third down snap, forcing Atlee to settle for a field goal, and the halftime score was 17-5.

Hanover scored in the third to extend the lead on a drive which included a fake punt 39-yard run from Sam Rogers. L.J. Jones, who rushed 30 times for 166 yards, finished the drive from four yards out, and the game was no longer in doubt.

Atlee's lone touchdown came with four minutes left in the game, a 35-yard pass by Berry to Will McCombs.

Atlee finishes their best season in 13 years at 9-3.

Hanover now moves to the State Division 5 Semifinals next Saturday when they travel to Lorton to face South County, winners of ten straight after an 0-3 start. They defeated previously unbeaten Yorktown Friday afternoon 37-13 to win the Northern Region Championship.

Rucker "Probably" Won't Play In Regional Final

The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting Atlee Coach Roscoe Johnson has said quarterback Ruben Rucker "probably" will not play Friday in the Division 5 Regional Final against Hanover.

Rucker has been the starter all season, but injured his wrist late in the first half of the Raiders' double overtime semifinal win over Lee-Davis during a fumble.

Kenner Berry, who in relief of Rucker Friday threw two touchdown passes and ran for the game winning score in the second overtime, will likely start for the Raiders.

Johnson told HanoverCountySports.org Friday night on the field after the game that he has confidence in Berry.

"Kenner Berry is a good quarterback", Johnson said.

This means the rematch of these two county schools will feature two different starting quarterbacks. Andrew Knizner has been the signal caller for Hanover ever since Sam Rogers went down with an elbow injury against Henrico. Rogers is back playing, but not in the quarterback role due to the nature of the injury.

Big Second Half For Hanover; Atlee Survives in Double OT

The Atlee Raiders would not quit, coming back from a 14-point deficit late in the third quarter to force overtime, then scoring twice in extra sessions to outlast Lee-Davis 42-35 in double overtime to advance in the Central Region Division 5 Semifinals tonight.

Kenner Berry, in relief of an injured Ruben Rucker, found Shaquille Williams for two touchdown passes, one to tie the game in the fourth quarter, and the other to force a tie in the first overtime. Rucker injured his wrist late in the first half on a turnover.

The Raiders will welcome Hanover for the Division 5 Finals next Friday night. Hanover scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to beat Dinwiddie, 41-14.

The Confederates have won their last six over Atlee, including the 30-20 upset victory one week ago in Mechanicsville that gave Lee-Davis their first playoff berth since 1999. How much of tonight's game will be psychological? One distinct advantage now in Atlee's favor is homefield, as the Raider program has built one of the most fan-friendly, rabid homefield advantages in local high school football. Friday nights at Atlee are an experience, not just a game.

On the field? Lee-Davis must once again contain the twin-pronged attack of quarterback Ruben Rucker, his bevy of receivers, especially Will McCombs who caught nine balls for 99 yards last Friday, and running back Jarred Hall, who looks to bounce back tonight after only gaining 65 yards on 20 carries last week. Meanwhile, Confederates quarterback Israel Vaughan must step up once again to show he can consistently perform with the top signal-callers in the Capital District (Rucker, Malcolm Bell, Sam Rogers and Maurice Canady) after having his best performance of 2011 in last week's victory. Tyrell Eaton played brilliantly last week and must produce again. More output from Chris Simpson in the running game (54 yards last week) would help keep Rucker and Company off the field.

BOTTOM LINE: Adjustments. After playing seven nights ago, it's all about adjustments. Homefield will be huge for Atlee, who are 5-0 in their friendly confines, including wins over Hanover and Highland Springs. The Raiders want to play at home again the day after Thanksgiving. Lee-Davis just wants to play again next week either at Hanover or at Dinwiddie.

Hello again! For the fourth straight season, the Generals and Hawks meet in Division 5 playoff action. Dinwiddie has won two of the previous three, including last year's 28-21 Regional Title win at Hanover, so winning on the road is nothing new for the Generals. Darius Hawkins and Drakar Harvell (a name Hawk fans will remember from 2010) have consistently ranked as two of the top ten receivers in the Central Region this year, thanks to the strong arm of quarterback Bryan Finney. The Generals played a monster early season schedule, losing to Varina, Highland Springs and Meadowbrook en route to a 2-4 start before winning four straight to clinch their playoff berth. The Generals always bring playmakers and athletes and are playing their best ball of the season right now.

Hanover continues to be a team fighting for everything it gets in 2011. The season changed dramatically when Sam Rogers when down with an elbow injury against Henrico, handing the reins of the offense to Andrew Knizner, who has led the Hawks to a 4-1 record. Rogers returned in a slotback role the past two weeks so the Hawks can take advantage of his athleticism and north/south running ability. L.J. Jones, one of the area's leading rushers in 2011, needs at least 20 carries tonight, and triple-digit rushing numbers would go a long way to help the Hanover cause. Kicker Matt Palmen may play a role, a la the Henrico game, come crunch time.

BOTTOM LINE: Familiarity does not breed contempt here. Hanover is grateful for homefield advantage, but remembers 51 weeks ago when these same Generals ended their dreams of a third trip to the State Semifinals on Hanover turf. These hot 2011 Generals are capable of doing the same. But Coach Josh Just and staff have had two games and three weeks of practices to figure out how best to use Sam Rogers at slotback. Execution of that wrinkle may be the difference in tonight's game.

The Raiders fell Thursday night to Ocean Lakes in a five-set thriller in the semifinals of the Group AAA state tournament. Atlee won the first and third set, but fell 25-16 in the fourth and 15-12 in the fifth and deciding et.

Israel Vaughan threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as Lee-Davis, in a must-win situation, defeated Atlee 30-20 in Mechanicsville tonight to clinch a Division Five playoff berth. The Confederates led 23-0 at halftime.

Lee-Davis joins Atlee and Hanover in the Division Five playoffs, which begin next Friday. It's the first playoff berth for Lee-Davis since 1999 and the first for Atlee (8-2) since 1998.

Whichever Division 5 Regional Semifinal features two Hanover County schools will air on WHAN, 102.9 FM and 1430 AM, and online here next Friday night, November 18th!

Atlee Girls Volleyball Takes Central Region Crown

The Atlee girls volleyball team defeated James River in straight sets Thursday night to win the 2011 Central Region Championship. Atlee only lost one game in the tournament, defeating three Chesterfield County schools (Matoaca, Clover Hill and James River) on the way to the crown!

James River got to the finals by defeating Hanover in a semifinal match in straight sets back on Tuesday night.

In boys play, both Hanover and Atlee won their quarterfinal matches in the Central Region Tourney, with the Hawks upending Thomas Dale and Atlee beating Matoaca. On Wednesday, however, both fell in the semifinal round, as Atlee fell to Douglas Freeman in five sets and Hanover lost to James River in four.

14 kills and 11 blocks by Lucas Pienkowski and a 29 kill performance from Scott Brigham helped Patrick Henry survive Hermitage in a five-set thriller in the first round of the 2011 Colonial District Boys Volleyball Tournament. The final scores were 23-25, 26-24, 25-16, 26-24, 15-12.

The Patriots now move on to Wednesday's tournament semifinals against top-seeded Deep Run.

Hanover Defeats Lee-Davis

L.J. Jones rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns, while Justin Peebles had a big game at wide receiver as Hanover held serve at home with a 38-20 win over Lee-Davis in the Hanover County High School Football Game of the Week tonight.

Andrew Knizner, in his second game starting for the injured Sam Rogers, went 11 of 16 for 162 yards with one touchdown to Peebles.

Israel Vaughan, the Lee-Davis quarterback, rushed 18 times for 162 yards, plus went 7 of 17 for 62 yards and a touchdown pass to Tyrell Eaton. Vaughan rushed for the other two Lee-Davis scores.

Hanover, now 4-1, 7-1, hopes to trip up Varina at home next week for a share of the Capital District title. Lee-Davis, now 2-3, 4-4, will face Armstrong at home next week in a fight for their playoff lives.

Hanover Wins Capital District Field Hockey Title

Abby Bellows led the Hawks with two goals as Hanover defeated Atlee 4-1 in the Capital District Tournament Championship last night. The Hawks took a 3-0 lead to the half and never looked back, winning their 16th game of the year.

Atlee is now 11-3 on the season. Congratulations to both Hanover County teams!

FIELD HOCKEY:

Patrick Henry fell to second-seed Maggie Walker Governors School 4-1 in the Colonial District Tournament semifinals. Schyler Neal scored the PH goal while Kara Lloyd made 27 saves. MWGS is now 16-1, while Patrick Henry finishes 5-12-1.

In the Capital District championship game tonight, it will be #2 Atlee vs. #1 Hanover, with game time at 7pm.

Nathaniel Hall won the Capital District individual title with a time of 16:12 and helped lead Atlee to the boys title, scoring 41 points.

Molly Breidenbaugh won the individual girls title with a time of 18:35, while the Raiders grabbed the girls title as well with 40 points.

Hall and Breidenbaugh were both named runners of the year, while Jim Triemplar of Atlee won coach of the year.

FIELD HOCKEY:

CAPITAL DISTRICT TOURNAMENT:

Second-seeded Atlee defeated third-seeded Lee-Davis 2-1 in double overtime to advance to the District Finals where they will play top-seeded Hanover. Emily Dietrick scored the game winning goal in the second overtime period. Hanover defeated Henrico in the other semifinal match, 2-1, scoring both of their goals in the first half.

Lee-Davis finishes their season with a record of 7-6, while Atlee improves to 11-2 and Hanover to 15-2.

The Raiders and Hawks meet for the Capital District Tournament Title Thursday at 7pm.

COLONIAL DISTRICT TOURNAMENT:

Melissa Bresko scored in the second overtime to give fifth-seeded Patrick Henry a 2-1 upset over fourth-seeded J.R. Tucker in the District quarterfinals. The Patriots move on to face the top seed, the Maggie Walker Governor's School, in the semifinals at 6pm tonight.

Atlee, Hanover, Patrick Henry Post Wins in Week Seven....

L.J. Jones rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hanover Hawks past Armstrong 44-0 in Capital District play Friday night. Quarterback Andrew Knizner, playing for the injured Sam Rogers, threw a touchdown pass. Hanover is now 3-1 in the Capital, 6-1 overall.

Ruben Rucker passed for 213 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Will McCombs, plus rushed for a fifth as Atlee rolled over Glen Allen, 56-20. Atlee scored on its first possession on a nine-play, 71 yard drive that only took 1:12. The Raiders go to 3-1 in the Capital, 6-1 overall and will stay in the #1 position in Division 5 playoff points.

Raymond Minor scored a touchdown for Patrick Henry as the Patriots finally got their first win of the 2011 season, 41-0 over Thomas Jefferson in front of a Homecoming crowd in Ashland. The Patriots are now 1-3, 1-6 and face J.R. Tucker on the road next Friday.

The lone loss in the county Friday was by Lee-Davis, whose playoff hopes took a hit with a 38-14 loss to Highland Springs. Chris Simpson and Tyrell Eaton each scored touchdowns for the Confederates, who drop to 2-2, 4-3. Coupled with John Marshall's win over Douglas Freeman, Lee-Davis will likely drop from #3 to #4 in the Division 5 playoff standings with three games left in the regular season.

Atlee's Hailey Brooks had 19 assists and 8 digs, while Meg Bowers had 9 kills to help lead the Raiders to a 3-0 win over 2nd place Lee-Davis Tuesday night in a Capital District showdown. Lindsey Neal led Lee-Davis with 12 digs.
